Blog 22: Senior Project Relfection

1) I am most proud of making speaking time for my presentation.  My parents made me present to them three times. Twice last night, and my mom woke me up at 5am to present to her again.  Each time I presented I didn't make time but I really slowed down during my presentation.  I'm also really happy that people enjoyed my activity.

2b) AP

3) I really felt that I chose a good topic.  I chose it over karate because I felt like there would be more research on it.  Over the course of this year I really learned how to fine quality research.  Good research is what really gives a statement credibility.  Being able to find expert sources is a million times more useful than being able to bend your body into pretzels.

4) There was a lot of procrastination during my project.  I was short on time for both my 10min and my 30min presentations due to lack of planning and I often forgot to update my blog.  If I could do it all over again, I'd pay more attention to deadlines and just start everything earlier.

5) Although my topic focused on the practice of Bikram yoga, my mentor taught me a lot about running a small business.  I also plan on continuing my volunteer reception duties at the yoga studio.  All the desk work has given me some experience which can help me find a job in the near future.

Blog 21: Mentorship

 Mentorship Log  65 hours

My mentor's name is Vanessa Gomez, an instructor at Bikram Yoga Rancho Cucamonga

The most important thing that I have gained from my this experience is how to run a small business.  It's completely unrelated to my topic but Vanessa had me do a lot of desk work like data entory.  We did a lot of behind the scenes type things like inventory that doesn't come to mind when yoga is mentioned.
From the practice, the most important think was I got back into shape.  After my shoulder injury I had been too sedentary, but now I'm in good condition to resume my karate training.

My mentor and interviewees helped put my on the right track for answering my essential questions.  They would mention something interesting to me that I would later research online. As well as my mentor would email me articles she thought were interesting.  ESA taught me how to research the right way and from there I chose my answers based on information that was consistent throughout multiple sources.

Blog 20: Exit Interview

(1) What is most beneficial about the practice of Bikram Yoga?
  • Poses that increase circulation throughout the body
  • Losing weight through a full body workout
  • Mood improvement and decrease in anxiety/stress
Best answer would be my answer one because the increased circulation allows injuries to heal.  Many people are not able to exercise while injured so I think this makes Bikram yoga unique.
(2) I chose my best answer after noticing improvement in my injured shoulder and was able to find research supporting my answer.

(3)After finding foundation research I started having a difficult time finding research that was specific to my answers.  Once I started using the Cal Poly database ProQuest I was able to find some good dissertations ad theses that were specifically about my answers.

Blog 14: Independent Component 1

Literal:

a) I, Jessica Hartlein, affirm that I have completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

b) My mentor, Vanessa Gomez, the studio director Greg White, and another instructor Josh Jones helped me complete my independent component 1.

c) Independent Component 1

d) For my independent component I separated out the hours that I actually practiced yoga and logged it on my spreadsheet.  On weekend mornings I attended the first yoga class of the day.

Applied:

Before senior project I had never done BikramYoga before.  I came to understand the foundation through practice and research.  My mentor and the rest of the staff have helped me discover the benefits of Bikram Yoga for myself.  Since I began practicing in October, I've noticed an increase in my stamina and flexibility as well as significant improvement in an old injury.

Blog 16: Advisory Meeting #2

EQ: What is most beneficial about the practice of Bikram Yoga?

Answer 2: Losing weight through a full body workout

One 90 minute session of Bikram yoga can burn 350-600 calories.

The 26 different poses all focus on working different muscle groups.

Adults who practice yoga are more likely to maintain a healthy weight than those who do not.

Bikram yoga is fun and effective way to reach or maintain a healthy weight.

Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

1) I would like to do 30 more hours of mentorship for my second independent component.
2) I will continue to spend my weekend mornings practicing yoga and helping my mentor.
3)  Now that I've been studying under my mentor for a while she has entrusted me with more responsibilities. Not only have I been physically been practicing yoga but my mentor has been teaching me the business side of the studio. This would help me understand all aspects of Bikram Yoga, as well as expose me to more research and more people who are willing to answer my questions.

Blog 10: The Holiday

1) During the break I consistently practiced yoga at the studio and talked to my mentor. I also attended a class let by Balwan who is part of the yoga teacher training program.

2) The most important thing that I learned was not to push myself too hard during class.  My mentor always tells me to take it slow but I really want to master all the poses.  I used to push too hard or go into a part of a posture I wasn't warmed up for and feel really sore the next day.

3) For an interview I would talk to Greg White, the owner of Bikram Yoga Rancho Cucamonga.  He has been teaching Bikram Yoga for 5 years and my mentor and I have explained the senior project to him.
